5.11’s new Patrol Duty Uniform™ unites traditional look with modern function

Most departments keep the same uniform designs year after year, because by and large, Law Enforcement is deeply rooted in tradition. Customary poly-wool and poly-rayon uniforms have been the standard since the 1940s, so why consider anything else? Because while times have changed, uniforms haven’t evolved much since World War I.

The physical demands on today’s officers require uniforms that retain the traditional appearance administrators expect, while providing adequate comfort and movement. There’s also a psychological aspect. “Most uniforms are so constrictive that officers are often reluctant to bend over or climb a fence,” says John W., a Northern California police officer. “If officers are thinking about their uniforms and not their jobs, it becomes a safety issue.” 5.11® just introduced a uniform that provides an ideal combination of comfort, movement, utility and safety.

5.11’s new Patrol Duty Uniform™ blends functional innovation with the neat, clean, professional look that is essential to command staff and the public. Made of durable 65/35 poly-cotton ripstop or twill, the fabric is Teflon® treated for stain and soil resistance. The comfortable, breathable material has superior long-term fade resistance. And for added convenience, the tough, economical wash-and-wear fabric comes out of the dryer ready to wear – saving you hundreds of dry cleaning dollars per year.

Officer John W. and fellow officer Jim H. were directly involved in PDU product development. Among their requests was an expandable comfort waist, and for the women’s version, a natural waistline as well. John W. explains that female officers, who usually wear tailored men’s uniforms, need their duty belts to rest at a more natural position in order to draw their weapons from a safe height.

The officers also wanted something else not normally found on uniforms: bi-swing shoulders for enhanced freedom of movement. In addition, they asked for a diamond-gusseted crotch. “The diamond crotch is 100 percent better than the traditional style crotch, making the garment more durable because it’s not under as much stress,” John W. explains. “The pants can last longer without the seams busting up. That’s huge; it’s the best thing for officers getting in and out of the car all day long, climbing over fences, and taking a knee to handcuff someone.”

Comfortable, great-fitting PDU shirts feature a mic-cord pass-through just above your duty belt for use with your radio and ear piece. Also included are 5.11’s Hidden Document Pockets (Class B), pen slots, a button-covered placket with a YKK® zipper, epaulets, underarm vents and adjustable wrist cuffs. The pants feature flat-front styling, permanent creases and a flashlight pocket on the back of the leg on the Class B pants. The Class A pants have a hidden zipper side seam pocket, while the Class B pant includes large double-entry cargo pockets and a secure covert pocket.

5.11® offers Class A & B Patrol Duty Uniform shirts and pants in two styles. With separate sizing, design and construction for men and women, 5.11® PDUs offer one of the broadest size offerings in the uniform market today. Special odd waist sizes of 31, 33 and 35 are available for men, and the women’s uniforms come in misses and plus sizes. Offering great performance at a great price, PDU shirts and pants are competitively priced at $49.99. They’ll be available in March 2010 through your local 5.11 Dealer, who also offers unmatched 5.11 footwear, outerwear and accessories. “The PDU provides a really good mix of natural and synthetic fibers, it breathes well and the fact that the uniform fits better makes it very functional,” John W. says. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the PDU as a uniform option. The Patrol Duty Uniform blends the function of a tactical uniform with the look of a formal uniform. Our administrators want us to be out on the streets with formal suit-looking attire, but officers want something that is comfortable and functional. Thanks to 5.11®, now we have both.”
